EPS food containers are extensively used in the food service industry due to their light weight and superior insulation properties. However, after use, these containers are often covered in food residue and liquids, which conflicts with the requirement for cleanliness. According to data from 2019 in the United States, over 136 million pounds of EPS were successfully recycled, of which 46.4 million pounds came from post-consumer packaging, with food containers representing a significant portion.
The primary hurdle in recycling food containers lies in the need for more specialized technologies and equipment. Integrating shredding, washing, and drying functions into a single recycling system is emerging as one of the most effective solutions to this issue.
Specialized Techniques: Transforming Waste into Resources
The recycling process for food containers begins with shredding. Contaminated EPS containers are broken down into small fragments, which are then thoroughly cleaned through multiple washes to remove any residue or dirt. After cleaning, the EPS fragments are dried and fed into a compaction system, such as an EPS compactors. Using screw compression technology, the fragments are transformed into dense EPS blocks.
This streamlined process not only addresses the cleaning challenges but also enables the repurposing of discarded materials. Compressed EPS blocks can be sold to recyclers and further processed into plastic pellets(Pelletizing), reinvigorating the plastic recycling value chain.
Environmental and Economic Benefits: The Role of Compactors
The introduction of compaction equipment(EPS Compactors) has made EPS recycling more accessible and efficient. Through this technology, used food containers can be collected, processed, and reused.
