Since the introduction of expanded polystyrene (EPS), foam containers have become ubiquitous in packaging, especially for food services. Reheating leftovers in these containers is a convenient option, but Rolf Halden, a professor at Arizona State University’s Center for Environmental Health Engineering, warns of potential health risks associated with microwaving EPS foam.

Microwaving EPS containers raises two main concerns. First, heat can cause chemical compounds to seep into food, especially with lower-quality plastics. EPS containers may release toxins when microwaved, highlighting the need to use safe, heat-resistant materials such as polypropylene (PP). Unlike EPS, PP can withstand temperatures up to 130°C and remains stable even at 140°C, making it a safer choice. Second, microwaving can weaken the container’s structure, risking spillage of hot food either in the microwave or upon removal, which is one reason some advocate against EPS foam containers.

However, these health risks are largely operational rather than inherent to EPS itself. When used as intended, EPS containers pose minimal health concerns. The focus has thus shifted toward recycling EPS foam rather than halting its use entirely.

Physical recycling techniques have become crucial, involving cleaning, shredding, and compressing EPS foam.
