Garbage sorting is the first step in resource recycling, but a large amount of recyclable waste is sent to landfills. According to the latest data from Bradenton’s Solid Waste Department, about 70% of recyclable materials are not properly processed. So this is mainly due to improper sorting. This is particularly true for EPS, which is often categorized incorrectly and sent to landfills.

EPS in the Recycling System: Obstacles and Solutions

EPS, widely used in packaging, is recyclable but is often treated as non-recyclable foam. In Bradenton, if more than 20% of a recycling load is found to be non-recyclable, the entire load is redirected to a landfill. This scenario is not unique—cities across Florida face similar challenges. The cost of recycling is about $70 per ton, but contaminated loads can increase this cost to $110 per ton, making the process less efficient. Without advanced technology, EPS ends up as landfill waste rather than being repurposed.

Raising Public Awareness and Expanding Recycling Efforts

Local officials are advocating for a public awareness campaign to educate residents on how to properly recycle EPS and other materials. The widespread use of EPS has led to a surge in foam waste, and its non-biodegradable nature makes it particularly troublesome for the environment. However, EPS is valuable in the recycling market, serving as a raw material for plastic pellets and other products. Educating the public on its recyclability is key to reducing waste.

The Role of Technology in EPS Recycling: A Sustainable Solution

Technological advancements in EPS recycling have paved the way for efficient waste management. By using EPS Compactor  machines, discarded EPS foam can be compressed into dense ingots, which not only conserve space but also create a valuable material for reuse. This dual benefit highlights the importance of incorporating these machines into recycling facilities. It can also turn waste into resources and make the recycling process more cost-effective and sustainable.
